Mistral AI has closed a €3 billion Series D funding round at a valuation of approximately $24 billion, marking the largest equity fundraise by a privately held European technology company. Samsung Electronics led the round, with EQT’s Scaleup Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity serving as co-leads. Additional participants include ASML, Bpifrance, Salesforce Ventures, BlackRock, Andreessen Horowitz, Nvidia, and General Catalyst.

Founded three years ago in Paris, Mistral has positioned itself as Europe’s primary alternative to U.S.-dominated frontier AI developers including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. The company has focused on open-weight models that allow businesses and developers to access and customize AI systems more freely than fully closed alternatives. That approach appeals to enterprises and governments seeking greater control over data handling, deployment, and AI infrastructure without full dependence on foreign platforms.

Mistral said the new capital will fund frontier research expansion, compute capacity scaling, and accelerated commercial growth. The company currently operates across 20 countries and supports more than 125 enterprise customers, including ASML, Airbus, and HSBC.

Samsung’s participation signals that major global technology groups see strategic value in backing a credible European AI competitor. The involvement of EQT’s Scaleup Europe Fund, the EU-backed vehicle established to address Europe’s late-stage capital gap, also reflects the geopolitical dimension of the investment.

The $24 billion valuation is a milestone for European tech but leaves a significant gap relative to U.S. rivals, which command larger compute budgets, wider developer ecosystems, and stronger model training infrastructure. Europe also continues to face structural challenges around data center capacity, chip access, and public-sector AI adoption. Mistral’s next phase will depend on translating investor confidence into durable revenue and large-scale deployment.
