Key Notes
- OpenAI is reportedly nearing a funding round of up to $30 billion, although the financing has not closed and its final size remains unsettled.
- The proposed valuation excludes the new investment, so a fully subscribed round would imply a higher post-money value.
- The talks combine a potential bridge to a public listing with separate negotiations over additional computing capacity in the UAE.
OpenAI is nearing a funding round of up to $30 billion that would value the company at $1.25 trillion before the new investment, adding another enormous financing to the race to build and sell advanced AI. Investors from the United Arab Emirates and asset manager Coatue are leading the discussions, CNBC reported, citing people familiar with the deal.
The financing remains unfinished, with its final size still being determined. According to the report, OpenAI wants investor signatures by the end of next week and is positioning the round as a bridge ahead of a potential initial public offering.
What the $1.25 Trillion Valuation Means
The proposed figure is a pre-money valuation: it excludes the cash being raised. If OpenAI received the full $30 billion on those terms, the straightforward post-money calculation would be approximately $1.28 trillion. That is a conditional calculation, rather than an announced closing value or a public-market share price.
OpenAI’s last officially announced financing provides a useful reference point. In March, the company announced $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation. The new proposal therefore needs to be compared using consistent definitions: March’s figure included the investment, while the reported October figure does not.
The distinction also separates a company’s valuation from its revenue and spending power. A trillion-dollar valuation reflects what investors are prepared to pay for ownership under particular terms. Only the capital actually committed and received can help finance operations, and a higher headline value does not establish profitability.
The UAE Connection Extends Beyond Investment
Alongside the fundraising, OpenAI is negotiating a commercial agreement for more computing capacity from the UAE, CNBC reported. The potential connection between financing and infrastructure gives the talks significance beyond the amount of cash involved.
OpenAI already has an established infrastructure relationship in the country. Its May 2025 Stargate UAE announcement described a planned 1-gigawatt cluster in Abu Dhabi, including 200 megawatts expected to come online in 2026. That earlier project provides context for the relationship; it does not confirm the terms of the new commercial negotiations.
In its March funding announcement, OpenAI described dependable computing capacity as central to research, product delivery and expansion. The business challenge is to turn that capacity into services customers keep buying, while bringing down the cost of providing them. Funding can support that process, but it cannot settle the economics on its own.
A Capital Race Alongside the Model Race
The proposed round comes as Anthropic prepares for its own potential public offering. Our recent IPO coverage examined its reported third-quarter revenue and adjusted profitability, highlighting how the competition is increasingly being judged through financial performance alongside model capabilities.
OpenAI’s commercial expansion is visible in deployments such as Uber’s workforce rollout of ChatGPT Work. Wider distribution offers a route to recurring business revenue, although availability alone does not establish active adoption, customer returns or the margins OpenAI earns.
The next concrete milestone is a signed and completed financing with disclosed terms. Until then, the reported $1.25 trillion valuation is an indication of investor negotiations, while the eventual size of the round and any associated computing agreement will determine what resources OpenAI actually gains.
