President Trump responded to the recent debate around AI safety on Saturday by dismissing concerns as part of a pattern of what he called hoaxes “generated by the Radical Left Dumocrats, for purposes of destroying our Country.”
He began by writing on Truth Social that “many people think that the words ‘Artificial Intelligence’ are inaccurate, and very ineloquent.” He then posted a poll asking followers to vote on a replacement name: Superior Intelligence, Extreme Intelligence, or Supreme Intelligence. The poll was still open as of publication.
A couple of hours later, Trump followed up, claiming that efforts toward “the decimation, or destruction, of AI” belong on a list of alleged Democratic hoaxes alongside Russia investigations, impeachment proceedings, and other issues he has previously dismissed in similar terms.
Trump argued the criticism “began with an attack on our Data Centers,” which he said “largely failed” once communities realized the wealth and prestige the facilities brought. He said critics are now “going straight at AI” instead. He offered no evidence that public skepticism of AI and data centers isn’t genuine; both Republicans and Democrats have raised concerns about data centers, and New York recently became the first state to halt permits for large new projects.
Trump said he will “cherish” the AI industry, help it, and “watch over it, as it grows.” He also announced plans to form an AI Force, modeled on the Space Force he created in his first term, and said he will soon name an AI “Czar.”
“Only High I.Q. individuals need apply!” he wrote. He gave no detail on what duties either the AI Force or the czar role would involve. Venture capitalist David Sacks stepped down as Trump’s prior AI and crypto czar earlier this year.
The Backdrop
Trump’s post follows a period of intensified public debate over AI safety. AI researcher Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic earlier this month, saying leading AI companies “earnestly believe it could kill us all by the end of the decade” and are “gambling with our lives.”
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei subsequently released a proposal to “pace the frontier” of AI development, which OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk appeared to endorse. Trump did not name Amodei or Anthropic directly, but his remarks read as a response to that broader conversation.
Critics of the industry have offered a different critique, arguing that framing AI risk mainly around distant existential threats can distract from more immediate harms the technology already causes.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, appearing on stage with Trump at the All-In Summit, agreed with the president that the AI backlash is a “hoax” and said “we’re not going to let” a slowdown happen.
Trump’s stated priority throughout has been maintaining American leadership in AI ahead of China, which he has framed as the central stake in how the technology is regulated, or left largely unregulated, going forward.
