Novo Nordisk Partners With Anthropic To Speed Up Drug Discovery

Novo Nordisk and Anthropic have announced a collaboration aimed at accelerating drug discovery using Claude, with the Danish pharmaceutical company set to apply Anthropic’s models to specific research workflows and to broader software development across the business.

The companies said Wednesday they will work together on drug discovery obstacles identified by Novo’s scientists and computational teams, building purpose-built tools for particular scientific workflows while also drawing on Claude’s biological reasoning capabilities. Novo will additionally use Anthropic’s models to speed up AI-driven software development company-wide.

What Each Side Is Bringing

“Joining forces with Anthropic will supercharge our R&D organisation and help us on our mission to bring new, transformative health solutions to people living with chronic diseases,” Novo Nordisk president and chief executive Mike Doustdar said in a statement announcing the deal. “AI can help us increase productivity in R&D and compress the path from research to marketed product.”

As an initial step, Novo will test Claude Science, Anthropic’s scientific research workbench, on specific research and development workflows, focusing on problems where the two companies expect the combined capabilities to have the greatest impact. Novo said the arrangement includes data governance protocols and human oversight requirements intended to keep AI use consistent with its compliance standards.

Anthropic co-founder and chief executive Dario Amodei framed the potential impact in sweeping terms. “AI’s increasing capability brings with it the potential to compress a century’s worth of biological and medical breakthroughs into a decade,” he said in a statement.

Inside Claude Science

Anthropic launched Claude Science as a dedicated research workbench that connects to more than 60 scientific databases and includes prebuilt toolkits for fields such as genomics, proteomics, structural biology and cheminformatics. The platform uses a primary agent that can spawn specialized sub-agents to divide up research workloads, paired with a dedicated reviewer agent that checks citations and calculations before any output reaches a human researcher.

Anthropic has said early users at institutions including the Allen Institute and the UCSF Brain Tumor Center reported significant reductions in the time needed for complex analytical tasks. The company has been clear that Claude Science runs on its existing model lineup, including Claude Opus, rather than a separately trained scientific model.

Part of a Broader Pharma AI Push

The Novo deal is the company’s third major AI platform partnership in under six months. Novo struck a deal with OpenAI earlier this year for enterprise-wide AI integration spanning drug discovery, manufacturing and commercial operations, and named Amazon Web Services its preferred strategic cloud and AI partner in August.

For Anthropic, the agreement extends a pharma strategy that already includes Bristol Myers Squibb, which deployed Claude to more than 30,000 employees in May, and follows the company’s reported acquisition of stealth drug-discovery biotech Coefficient Bio.

The announcement lands as Anthropic continues to expand its enterprise footprint ahead of a planned initial public offering that could value the company near $965 billion, following a stretch of investor meetings earlier this year. It also follows a run of scientific results the company has pointed to as evidence of Claude’s research capabilities, including an unreleased model’s progress on a 160-year-old math problem tied to the Riemann hypothesis.

Pharmaceutical companies have moved quickly to formalize AI partnerships this year as drug developers look to cut the time and cost of bringing new treatments to market. Novo, long known for its diabetes and obesity treatments, has framed its AI investments as central to speeding development of therapies for chronic diseases, where lengthy trial timelines and complex biological modeling have traditionally slowed the path from early research to an approved product.

By working with OpenAI, Anthropic and Amazon Web Services within the same year, Novo is effectively hedging across the major AI platforms rather than committing to a single vendor for its research and development pipeline. That multi-vendor approach mirrors a pattern seen elsewhere in the industry, where large pharmaceutical companies increasingly run parallel pilots with different AI providers before deciding where to concentrate deeper, longer-term deployments. Novo has not disclosed the financial terms of its agreement with Anthropic or a timeline for expanding Claude Science beyond its initial pilot workflows.
