Key Notes
- Anthropic disclosed $2.75 million in personal security expenses for Dario Amodei in 2025, alongside $1.29 million for Daniela Amodei’s protection, home security and transportation.
- Dario’s security bill was about 4.2x his salary paid in 2025 and was already included within his approximately $17.96 million total compensation package.
- The company says its board approved enhanced protection after an independent assessment of risks associated with the executives’ roles and increased public attention.
Anthropic spent almost $2.75 million protecting chief executive Dario Amodei in 2025, according to its IPO filing. The cost was about 4.2x the $654,167 he received in salary that year, offering a glimpse of the personal security expenses behind one of the AI industry’s most closely watched companies.
The filing lists $2,745,874 in personal security expenses for Dario and another $1,293,629 for president Daniela Amodei, his sister. Her figure covers personal protection, home security and transportation. Together, those disclosed expenses exceeded $4 million.
These are costs already incurred in 2025. They should not be read as a newly announced security budget or a commitment to spend the same amount in a future year. The Next Web highlighted the figures on October 30, after Anthropic’s registration statement made the breakdown public.
Four Times His Salary, but Part of a Larger Pay Package
The salary comparison is striking, but it describes only one component of Dario’s compensation. His total disclosed package for 2025 was approximately $17.96 million, including stock awards, option awards and other compensation. The security expense is already included in that total; adding it again would overstate the package.
Equity awards also make the headline total different from a cash salary or a sum necessarily realized during the year. Our earlier pay breakdown examined how those components shaped the Amodeis’ reported compensation.
The year matters for another reason. Anthropic’s filing says Dario and Daniela’s annual base salary rates rose to $1.38 million each effective July 1, 2026. The $654,167 figure used in the 4.2x comparison is salary paid in 2025, rather than their current annual rate.
Why the Board Approved the Protection
Anthropic says an independent security consultancy assessed the personal security risks facing its CEO and president in 2025. The board subsequently approved enhanced protection, citing the assessment, increased media attention and risks associated with their roles. The company presents the program as a way to protect business continuity.
In its risk disclosures, Anthropic also says increased public attention on AI has raised physical and information security risks. It reports threats to employee safety and attempts to obtain confidential information. Those are the company’s disclosures; the compensation figures alone do not establish how likely any particular threat was to materialize.
The distinction between a business expense and a personal benefit is important here. An executive’s protection can serve the company’s interests while still appearing among the benefits disclosed in a compensation package. Its inclusion in the pay figures does not mean the executive received an equivalent cash payment.
The SEC’s compensation guide explains that summary totals are accompanied by more detailed disclosures about their components. The agency’s role concerns disclosure to investors; the company’s decisions about compensation remain business decisions.
For prospective shareholders, that makes the footnotes as useful as the headline salary. They show what the company paid, how it classified the expense and why its board approved it. Anthropic’s filing brings those decisions into view alongside its broader IPO risk disclosures, as the costs of running a frontier AI company receive closer scrutiny.
