President Donald Trump asked Grok how Venezuelans would react to Nicolás Maduro’s capture during a December 2025 meeting with Elon Musk, TIME reported, citing an official present.
The chatbot predicted celebrations ahead of the January operation, according to TIME. The account concerns an assessment of public reaction; it does not establish that Grok devised or directed the mission.
The episode comes against a broader expansion of government access to commercial AI. In July 2025, xAI announced a Defense Department contract with a $200 million ceiling, alongside plans for specialized national security models and implementation support.
In September 2025, its OneGov offer made Grok products available to federal departments and agencies for $0.42 over 18 months. The company also committed engineers to help agencies introduce the tools and train personnel to use them.
