Key Notes
- Perplexity Teammates can take on recurring responsibilities and coordinate other agents, with the initial research preview restricted to individual Max subscribers on the web.
- Work draws on the subscription’s credit allocation, so complex projects and frequent automations can increase consumption.
- Fully local Computer on supported Macs is a separate feature and should not be confused with the Teammates web preview.
Perplexity AI is expanding its assistant from completing individual requests to taking responsibility for continuing work. Its new Teammates agents can keep track of an assigned job, coordinate additional agents and return when something needs attention, rather than wait for a user to type the next prompt.
The company’s November 6 product update details the rollout alongside fully local Computer on supported Macs and a refreshed Voice mode. Teammates are initially a research preview for individual Max subscribers on the web. Perplexity’s documentation says Pro and enterprise subscriptions are not included by default.
Each teammate has its own role, desktop and browser. It can watch connected work tools, retain context and divide a larger project into parallel tasks. People can inspect the work, take over the desktop or redirect the agent. Teammates assigned to the same Project can share files and instructions while retaining separate responsibilities.
An Ongoing Role Needs More Than a Good Prompt
That setup is aimed at work with a recurring source and a defined output. A bug-triage role, for example, has a queue to watch and an investigation to deliver. A one-off request ends when the answer arrives; an ongoing role needs a rule for when to start again and when to involve its owner.
The feature builds on Perplexity Computer, the company’s system for coordinating models and tools across multi-step tasks. Teammates give that system a more persistent working relationship with the user, adding a place to return to a particular responsibility rather than rebuilding the assignment from scratch.
The $200 Subscription Still Has Usage Limits
The Max plan costs $200 a month or $2,000 a year. Teammates use its monthly credit allocation, and the help page warns that parallel agents, large projects and frequent automations can consume more credits. The subscription therefore provides access with metered usage, rather than unlimited background labor.
New teammates use Claude Opus 5.5 by default, according to Perplexity, although users can choose another model. Tool access follows installed plugin and Project permissions. Perplexity says each teammate runs in an isolated environment, with its browsing session and cookies limited to that teammate.
For a business task, the important distinction is between monitoring information and being allowed to change something. An agent that summarizes a support queue has a different responsibility from one that issues refunds. Defining the expected result, the permitted actions and the point for human review makes the assignment easier to evaluate.
Local Computer Is a Separate Update
The same product update adds fully local Computer for supported Apple-silicon Macs, available to Pro, Max and Enterprise users with Mac app version 26.42.0 or later. Perplexity recommends 36 GB of unified memory. This is a separate deployment option; it does not mean that the web-based Teammates preview runs entirely on a user’s laptop.
Teammates joins a growing field of persistent assistants, including Anthropic’s Claude Duet. The competitive question is becoming more concrete than which chatbot produces the best answer: can an assistant carry out recurring work reliably, at a cost its owner can justify?
For now, the research-preview label is consequential. The launch describes a more ambitious workflow, but it does not establish how consistently the agents complete real assignments. That will be measured in finished work, the time people spend reviewing it and the credits required to get there.
