Elon Musk backed President Donald Trump’s move to call artificial intelligence “super intelligence,” saying the technology’s benefits deserved more attention during a White House appearance with industry leaders on September 29.
“I think it is worth highlighting the positive benefits of A.I. … S.I., pardon me,” Musk said in a clip posted by Fox News. Trump thanked him after he adopted the new abbreviation.
Trump signed an executive order the same day directing federal executive agencies to replace “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” with “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official communications, websites, reports and other non-statutory documents, to the extent permitted by law.
The order keeps the existing statutory AI definition for now and does not require rewriting earlier regulations, contracts or historical documents. It gives the White House science adviser 60 days to propose legislative language for a federal definition of the new terms.
The move follows Trump’s UN speech on September 22, where he said US government documents would adopt the new name. He had also polled followers about replacing the word “artificial” as part of his push to change how the technology is described.
