Cursor began rolling out Origin, a code-hosting platform built directly into its AI coding editor, in early beta to all paid users on August 17. The launch skips a full migration: repositories synced from GitHub keep GitHub as the “source of truth,” with pushes routing back there while Origin mirrors changes in real time.

The initial feature set is deliberately modest. Origin ships with repos, pull requests, code browsing and CLI-based push and clone, organized in a new Codebase tab inside the editor. Users can connect a GitHub organization, choose which repos to sync, and disconnect at any time, with pull request comments and reviews flowing both directions between Cursor and GitHub within seconds.

Because code, pull requests and Cursor’s AI agents now sit in the same interface, the pitch leans toward automation: a developer can ask questions about a repo they’re browsing and have the agent answer, make changes, update a pull request, or push a new branch without leaving Cursor. Early app integrations include Vercel for deploy previews on every pull request, and Depot and Buildkite for continuous integration, including existing GitHub Actions workflows.

Cursor has cited infrastructure figures for Origin, including 22.6 commits per second, roughly 296,000 clones per hour and under 400 milliseconds of global sync latency, though these are self-reported and not independently verified in production use. Enterprise organizations can opt their admins out of the rollout; everyone else on a paid plan got access as the beta began.

A Pattern Not an Isolated Move

The timing gave the launch far more attention than a routine beta typically draws. Within hours of Origin going live, GitHub suffered a major outage lasting nearly seven hours, with error rates near 20% across pull requests, issues and its API, and roughly 50% on file downloads; GitHub Copilot and enterprise single sign-on went down with it.

Developers online seized on the coincidence, and even a Cursor employee joked that the launch had been delayed because “GitHub was down.” Cursor’s own framing was more measured, presenting Origin as a low-risk companion layer rather than an urgent GitHub replacement, and product launches are typically locked in weeks ahead of time, so no evidence suggests Cursor timed the release around the outage.

Exits and the IPO Backdrop

The more consequential context is corporate rather than coincidental. Origin arrived not long after SpaceX closed its roughly $60 billion acquisition of Cursor’s parent company, and the move reads as an early sign of what that ownership might enable: Cursor pushing beyond its editor into the core infrastructure developers depend on daily.

Owning code hosting would give Cursor a foothold far stickier than an editor alone, since git hosting is fundamentally a trust-and-inertia product. Years of organizational structure, permissions, compliance audits and habit sit on top of GitHub for most teams, switching costs that have little to do with which tool is faster or more integrated.

Origin does not need to displace GitHub outright to matter; if AI agents keep generating a growing share of pull requests, as Cursor’s own figures suggest, then building the infrastructure suited to agent-driven development, rather than adapting infrastructure designed for humans, could be the more durable long-term bet.
