The Dot.com domain now redirects to the Grok Bot product and download page, just as OpenAI launches its Dots agents. The near-match means visitors typing the shorter address arrive at Elon Musk’s competing AI service.
TechCrunch reported that xAI owns Dot.com and that Whois records show a transfer in July. A widely shared X post by @birdabo highlighted the redirect on launch day.
OpenAI introduced Dots on September 29 as persistent agents with their own cloud computers. As covered in AIstify’s launch report, they can work across connected apps and carry out background assignments, with users able to review and redirect their work.
The juxtaposition makes the redirect look like a jab at OpenAI, but it does not establish that Musk personally bought the address or knew the Dots name in advance. The acquisition’s purpose and the time the redirect was configured remain unclear.
The odd detail is the missing “s”: Dots.com, the exact match for OpenAI’s product name, still leads to a Dots fashion-brand page promoting a relaunch. For a would-be naming prank, the singular address is a curious choice.
