China’s industry ministry is urging faster AI adoption in manufacturing as Beijing seeks to turn technological advances into economic growth. CCTV reported on October 16 that the push prioritizes practical industrial applications.
Deputy industry minister Yu Xiaohui called for wider deployment across raw materials, equipment manufacturing, consumer goods and electronics, alongside specialized AI agents. He also urged faster standards development, interconnected computing infrastructure and greater private investment.
The ministry released a guide on October 15 covering more than 1,000 industrial use cases across 20 sectors, including petrochemicals, steel and automobiles. Applications are grouped by maturity, distinguishing those ready for replication from pilots and projects requiring further technical development.
Nearly half of industrial AI applications remain at the pilot stage, according to Wei Liang of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology. The scaling challenge echoes Citi’s recent warning about enterprise adoption lagging behind AI capabilities.
The announcement follows October 9 policy guidelines calling for full implementation of China’s AI Plus initiative. Those measures pair wider use of AI in traditional industries with technology monitoring, early risk warnings and emergency response systems.
