Key Notes
- OpenAI told Axios it will acquire Pierre Computer and plans to integrate its Code Storage product into Codex, where Pierre technology is already used.
- The deal follows OpenAI’s disclosure of Pando, a Git backend built to support increasing work by coding agents.
- GitHub is also rebuilding its infrastructure as growing code generation puts pressure on repository storage, review and delivery.
OpenAI will acquire Pierre Computer, a developer-tools startup whose technology is already used in Codex, Axios reported on November 4, citing confirmation from the company. OpenAI plans to integrate Pierre’s Code Storage product into Codex, extending its reach into the infrastructure behind AI-assisted software development.
The deal would give OpenAI a larger role in a market long dominated by Microsoft’s GitHub. As coding agents produce more changes in parallel, the systems that store, track and distribute that work are coming under pressure. OpenAI, Anthropic and GitHub have each described projects to handle the growing workload.
What Pierre Brings to Codex
Pierre’s Code Storage is a distributed storage service built on Git. It lets developers create and manipulate repositories through software interfaces as well as familiar Git commands. Pierre says customers including Lovable, Bolt and Amp use the service for generated code and other files that change over time, including agent memories and design artifacts.
That places the product behind the applications developers use to build software. A coding tool can create a repository for a new project, store successive changes and connect those changes to build systems or other agents. Code Storage also advertises synchronization with GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket, giving its customers a way to connect it with existing development systems.
The company also maintains Diffs, an open-source library for displaying code and the differences between revisions. Code generation creates a need to inspect what changed, review it and decide what to merge. Storage and review tools help turn an agent’s output into work a team can evaluate and release.
OpenAI Is Already Rebuilding Its Own Git Backend
Two days before the acquisition report, OpenAI described Pando, a new backend that now powers development in its monorepo. The system retains compatibility with Git’s protocol and client while allowing more agents and engineers to push changes and fetch code concurrently.
OpenAI says Pando reduced median push latency nearly fivefold and delivers almost a petabyte of Git data a day. It began serving production traffic in April. The company built the core system with Codex and says it is exploring ways to share the underlying technology with users. Those internal demands give the Pierre deal a practical context: OpenAI is encountering the infrastructure problems its coding customers may face as their agent workloads grow.
Anthropic took a different approach with Scion, the source-control system it built as Claude drove a sharp increase in code changes. The projects reflect a growing investment by model developers in the machinery that supports coding agents, from fetching a repository to recording and merging the results.
GitHub Is Preparing for the Same Workload
GitHub has outlined its own infrastructure overhaul for organizations running large numbers of agents. The company says total Git activity on its platform rose from 218.2 billion events a month in September 2025 to 473.3 billion in August 2026. Its redesign aims to let repository reads and writes scale as more clients work at once.
The competition therefore extends across the development process. A team choosing an AI coding service also needs code storage, review, testing and a reliable route to deployment. Bringing Pierre into Codex would give OpenAI more of the infrastructure needed to support those steps, while GitHub works to keep its established platform at the center of the workflow.
