Anthropic plans to more than double its computing capacity in 2027, according to The New York Times. The expansion comes as the company prepares for its Nasdaq debut and signs deals with cloud providers, chipmakers and data center operators to secure enough capacity to train new models and serve more Claude users. The buildout gives investors a second set of numbers to track alongside Claude’s revenue growth. Anthropic disclosed $895.4 billion in purchase commitments and leases in its amended prospectus, nearly all related to computing and infrastructure. It expects about $447.5 billion to be incurred before the end of 2030, with almost all of the rest spread across 2031 to 2045. About $69.8 billion is due in the 12 months after September 30, 2026. Where the Extra Compute Will Come From
Part of the expansion is tied to Google and Broadcom. Anthropic says its agreement for 5 gigawatts of next-generation Google TPU capacity will begin coming online in 2027. Its separate Amazon deal covers up to 5 gigawatts of new capacity, including nearly 1 gigawatt expected by the end of 2026. Those figures describe agreements with different delivery schedules. Anthropic trains and runs Claude on Google TPUs, Amazon’s Trainium chips and Nvidia GPUs. Compute agreements
Anthropic has also contracted directly for dedicated GPU infrastructure. Nscale’s own prospectus says four agreements for its Monarch Compute Campus in West Virginia could generate up to $44.6 billion in payments, subject to delivery and service requirements. The site is due to use Nvidia’s Vera Rubin hardware. A second Nscale deal has been reported separately. Nscale prospectus
Signed Contracts Still Have to Become Working Clusters
Anthropic says some arrangements split chip procurement, financing, hosting and operations across different counterparties. A provider might meet its own obligations and become entitled to payment while delays elsewhere keep the cluster from going live. The filing also warns that tighter financing for infrastructure partners could delay delivery, raise prices or reduce the capacity ultimately available to Anthropic. Risk disclosures
Once the machines are running, Anthropic must decide how much capacity goes to developing its next generation of models and how much goes to serving the current one. The company says it shifts resources across research, customer demand and its own use of Claude. That makes the 2027 target a test of how quickly suppliers can get hardware into service and how much additional customer demand Anthropic can turn into revenue once they do. Operating strategy
