Sam Altman Becomes Ram Altman on X After PC Memory Remarks

Sam Altman’s X profile now reads Ram Altman after his comments about PC memory utilization drew debate over cloud AI and consumer hardware.

Sam Altman’s verified X account now displays the name “Ram Altman,” while retaining the @sama handle. The OpenAI chief’s profile was showing the change on November 4, following debate over his comments about memory in personal computers.

On the October 29 Cheeky Pint podcast, Altman argued that distributing scarce DRAM across individual computers was inefficient when it was “being used” only “5% of the time.” He advocated higher utilization through shared cloud infrastructure.

Elon Musk joined the debate on November 1, posting: “The people deserve to have their RAM too!” His response turned the disagreement over consumer memory and AI infrastructure into another public exchange between the technology executives.

Altman’s remarks concerned running AI models locally versus in data centers. He did not cite a usage study in that exchange. The 5% figure was his characterization of utilization over time, rather than evidence that 95% of every computer’s memory capacity is unused.

The renamed profile echoes RAM, or random-access memory, amid broader supply pressures. As AIstify previously reported, suppliers’ focus on AI infrastructure is affecting PC memory buyers. The profile itself provides no explanation for the display-name change.
