Meta Engineer Says AI Coding Is Outpacing His Understanding

Meta engineer Ali Hamie says AI-generated code can feel like a black box, sparking debate over review, testing and developers’ responsibility.

Meta software engineer Ali Hamie says AI-assisted coding is making him uncomfortable because he can build systems without understanding every detail. In an October 17 LinkedIn post, he described code increasingly feeling like a black box.

“I’m used to understanding what I’m building,” Hamie wrote. He said checking every generated line would take too long, leaving developers to judge how much understanding they need before moving forward with a system.

In an October 19 clarification, Hamie said the issue also affects his personal projects and reflects a broader engineering shift. He recommended defining designs carefully, investing in testing, and asking AI tools to explain or visualize the systems they produce.

The discussion drew mixed responses. Technology consultant Vishwa Sourabh Sahay called it an “architectural crisis,” warning about accountability and declining review skills. Other commenters compared the shift with earlier reliance on compilers and libraries, emphasizing tests and clear constraints.

The debate echoes a change Anthropic described in its Scion project: engineers still review every change request, but increasingly examine its intent instead of reading each line, while retaining responsibility for system constraints and design decisions.
