YouTube is testing a new AI-powered search feature called “Ask YouTube,” designed to deliver step-by-step answers that combine text with curated video content. The tool allows users to input complex queries, such as travel plans or recipes, and receive structured responses that include short clips, full videos, and contextual explanations.
The feature aims to address a common user behavior: searching for instructional or planning content through videos. Instead of returning a list of links, Ask YouTube presents organized results with relevant video segments, titles, and creator information. Users can also ask follow-up questions, enabling a more conversational and iterative search experience.
The test is currently available to Premium subscribers in the United States aged 18 and older, with plans to expand access over time. Google said the feature builds on its broader AI search strategy, which includes multi-step query handling and project-based tools across its ecosystem.
The move reflects a wider shift toward AI-assisted discovery, where platforms aim to reduce friction between search and action. By integrating structured answers with multimedia content, YouTube is positioning itself as both a search and planning tool, rather than just a video repository.
The experiment could also open new monetization opportunities, including the integration of sponsored content within AI-driven results, as platforms rethink how advertising fits into conversational search experiences.
