Stripe has launched Link, a digital wallet built to support payments by autonomous AI agents, marking a step toward agent-driven commerce. Announced at the company’s annual conference, the platform allows users to connect payment methods and authorize AI systems to make transactions on their behalf while maintaining control over spending.

Link supports traditional wallet features, including storing cards, bank accounts, crypto wallets, and buy-now-pay-later options, alongside tools to track spending and manage subscriptions. What differentiates it is its integration with AI agents, enabling them to initiate purchases such as bookings, tickets, or online shopping within defined permissions.

To address security concerns, Link uses an approval-based system. Agents must request authorization before completing transactions, with users receiving notifications to review and approve payments. The wallet relies on tokenization and virtual card issuance, ensuring that sensitive payment credentials are not directly exposed to AI systems. Over time, Stripe plans to expand controls, allowing users to set spending limits or automate approvals under specific conditions.

The product is built on Stripe’s infrastructure for agent-based payments, including issuing virtual cards and shared payment tokens. It also provides developers with tools to integrate wallet functionality into AI-driven applications without building payment systems from scratch.

The launch highlights a broader shift toward autonomous digital transactions, as companies explore how AI agents can handle routine commerce tasks while balancing convenience with security and user trust.
