Anthropic on June 11 launched Claude Corps, a national fellowship that will pay 1,000 early-career workers to spend a year helping US nonprofits use AI. The company is committing an initial $150 million. Fellows will receive intensive training on Claude, then embed full-time and in-person at host organizations for 12 months. Anthropic frames the effort as a way to spread AI’s benefits and invest in workers during a period it expects to be disruptive. The launch coincides with a policy framework from the company on AI’s impact on jobs.

The program runs as a three-way partnership. Anthropic funds it, sets strategy and provides Claude expertise. CodePath, a nonprofit that teaches college computer science, acts as the fellows’ legal employer and runs training. Social Finance handles measurement and is building a financial vehicle to scale the model. Key terms:

  • Fellows earn an $85,000 salary plus benefits, a CodePath mentor, Anthropic office hours and a large Claude token budget
  • Host organizations pay nothing for the fellow and receive a $10,000 implementation grant plus free Claude credits
  • At least 400 nonprofits will host fellows, including Braven, the Montgomery County Food Bank, Team Red, White & Blue and the YMCA of Greater Charlotte
  • Eligibility is open to anyone 18 or older with under two years of full-time experience, with no degree required; applicants must be authorized to work in the US

Applications opened June 11 and close July 17 for the first cohort of 100, which begins in October 2026. Two more cohorts start in January and August 2027. Anthropic says it will measure how much host organizations advance their missions and how fellows’ careers develop, then decide whether to expand. It also plans to open-source some of the underlying technology so others can build similar programs, and to replicate the model abroad.

The Case and the Criticism

  • Anthropic argues that companies building transformative AI have a duty to share the gains and support workers absorbing the change. President Daniela Amodei said the company hopes it becomes “a pillar of our strategy” to realize AI’s benefits while managing its risks.
  • The design is modeled loosely on service corps like AmeriCorps and Teach For America, but with a corporate sponsor and a single product at the center.
  • Critics note the dual purpose. Fellows train exclusively on Claude and build nonprofit workflows around it, which can leave host organizations tied to Anthropic’s ecosystem. Some have called it a talent-pipeline and adoption play rather than pure philanthropy.
  • That tension is a clear conflict of interest: the program advances a social mission while also expanding use of Anthropic’s product.

Part of a Bigger Push

Claude Corps is one piece of a larger $350 million in social spending Anthropic announced the same day. The other $200 million funds a separate Economic Futures research effort studying AI’s impact on jobs, tied to CEO Dario Amodei’s essay warning that AI could cause significant labor disruption. The timing is notable. Anthropic, valued at $965 billion, filed confidentially for an IPO earlier this month. The $150 million is also small against the scale of disruption Anthropic itself forecasts, which the company acknowledges by casting Claude Corps as a first step toward something much larger.
