Sam Altman has asked a U.S. federal court to dismiss punitive damages claims in a civil lawsuit filed by his sister, who accuses him of sexual abuse dating back more than two decades. In a filing in Missouri, Altman argued that the state’s child sexual abuse statute limits recovery to damages for injury or illness and does not permit punitive damages. He has denied the allegations.

The lawsuit, filed in January 2025 by Annie Altman, alleges repeated abuse during childhood. In response, Altman has filed a countersuit for defamation, seeking symbolic damages of $1. He stated that the goal is not financial compensation but a legal determination that the claims made against him are false.

The case adds to a series of legal and public challenges surrounding Altman, who became a prominent figure in the AI industry following the rise of ChatGPT. The civil proceedings are ongoing, with the court yet to rule on the motion regarding damages.

Separately, Altman is also involved in a high-profile lawsuit brought by Elon Musk, who has accused OpenAI of deviating from its original mission and misleading him in connection with his contributions. Microsoft, a key OpenAI partner, is also named in that case.

The overlapping legal disputes come at a time of heightened scrutiny for AI companies and their leadership as the sector continues to expand rapidly.
