Elon Musk says highly persuasive superintelligence could overwhelm many people, including himself. In an October 19 post on X, he warned about people’s vulnerability to systems capable of making exceptionally convincing arguments.
“So many people are going to get one-shotted by super persuasive super intelligences and I might be one of them,” Musk wrote. He provided no timeline, named no specific model and cited no experiment supporting the prediction.

The concern has a basis in existing persuasion research. A May 2025 study in Nature Human Behaviour, involving 900 participants, found that GPT-4 given personal information about its opponent was more persuasive than human debaters in controlled online discussions.
The researchers reported an 81.2% increase in the odds of higher agreement with an opponent after personalized GPT-4 debates, compared with human debates. That measures an effect in short, structured exchanges; it does not establish that AI can reliably overpower anyone’s judgment.
Musk has also promoted superintelligence as a business label. Earlier this month, he backed a proposed SpaceXSI rebrand for his AI business. His latest message adds a personal warning about persuasive systems to his public advocacy of the technology.
