Instacart has launched Clementine, an AI-powered grocery shopping assistant designed to convert natural language requests, recipes, and existing grocery lists into ready-to-buy carts. The feature is now available to users in the United States and Canada.
Clementine allows users to describe their needs conversationally, such as requesting a week of budget-friendly kids’ lunches, high-protein dinners for two, or a repeat of their usual order. The assistant generates personalized recipe suggestions and surfaces content from trusted publishers, tailoring recommendations to household preferences including dietary requirements such as gluten-free, vegetarian, nut-free, and organic options. It also highlights relevant deals and promotions and suggests lower-cost product alternatives.
Users can upload a photo of a handwritten grocery list or a screenshot of a digital one, and Clementine will convert it directly into a cart. The feature reflects a broader shift in how grocery delivery platforms are positioning themselves, moving beyond order fulfillment into household meal planning and pre-purchase decision making.
Instacart joins Uber Eats and DoorDash in deploying conversational AI grocery assistants. Uber Eats launched a similar cart-building feature in February, and DoorDash introduced its Ask DoorDash chatbot in June. The parallel rollouts indicate that delivery platforms are now competing on planning utility as much as delivery speed and product selection, and are working to retain users within their own apps rather than losing meal planning activity to general-purpose AI tools such as ChatGPT.
Instacart CEO Chris Rogers said the company has spent nearly 15 years building data on how families shop and eat, and that Clementine is designed to put that knowledge directly into the shopping experience.
