AMD and Anthropic have announced a strategic partnership to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in AMD Helios rack-scale solutions. Deployment of the first gigawatt is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027, across Anthropic’s own data centers and third-party cloud infrastructure.
The deployment will feature AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs, part of the MI450 Series, alongside AMD EPYC Venice CPUs, AMD Pensando networking, and ROCm software. The Helios rack-scale platform is designed for large-scale AI training and inference workloads. The announcement builds on Anthropic’s existing use of AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs.
Alongside the compute agreement, AMD has committed a strategic equity investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic, to be deployed over time in connection with the chip supply contract.
The two companies are also launching a multi-year engineering collaboration using Claude to accelerate AMD software development. The joint effort will focus on optimizing workloads for AMD Instinct GPUs and accelerating development of the ROCm software stack. AMD will also deploy Claude broadly across its engineering and product development teams.
AMD chair and CEO Lisa Su described the partnership as combining Anthropic’s frontier AI capabilities with AMD’s high-performance computing infrastructure, framing Helios as a major platform for next-generation AI deployment. Anthropic co-founder and chief compute officer Tom Brown said access to diversified hardware allows the company to match workloads to the most appropriate infrastructure for training and inference.
The deal marks a significant expansion of AMD’s position in the global AI infrastructure buildout as demand for compute capacity continues to accelerate across the industry.
