OpenAI appears to be preparing a new ChatGPT Pro Max subscription tier priced at $500 per month, based on references found in unreleased subscription code. The plan has not been officially announced, and details remain unconfirmed.

According to the leaked references, Pro Max would differentiate from the existing $200 Pro tier primarily through access to the “Fastest Work and Codex.” Higher usage limits may also be included, though this has not been confirmed.
The positioning suggests the plan is aimed at developers, researchers, and professional users running long agentic workflows rather than general consumers. ChatGPT Work handles extended multi-step tasks, while Codex can run coding jobs spanning hours or days, making inference speed particularly valuable in those contexts.
The plan may be connected to Cerebras infrastructure. OpenAI already uses Cerebras for its latency-focused inference path, including GPT-5.6 Sol Ultrafast, which can deliver response speeds up to 14 times faster than standard inference. The company has not confirmed a direct link between Cerebras and Pro Max.
The timing is notable ahead of OpenAI DevDay on September 29, where the company is expected to discuss new developer tools, API updates, and subscription tiers. OpenAI recently paused new signups for the $200 Pro plan due to system load while continuing to expand faster inference access.
If launched at $500 per month, Pro Max would significantly exceed competing premium tiers, including $200 plans from Anthropic and Cursor and Google’s approximately $250 AI Ultra subscription. Whether the price difference is justified by speed alone, expanded usage limits, or longer Work and Codex session allowances remains unclear pending an official announcement.
