Apple is forming a multi-year partnership with Google to strengthen its artificial intelligence capabilities for products such as Siri later this year. The collaboration will utilize Google’s Gemini models and cloud infrastructure to support Apple’s foundational AI models, according to a statement reviewed by CNBC.
“After careful evaluation, we determined that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and we’re excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for our users,” Apple said in an official joint statement.
Previously Apple was exploring a custom Gemini model to power a new version of Siri. The move comes as Apple has largely remained on the sidelines of the AI surge following the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022, while competitors such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta Platforms have invested heavily in AI tools and services.
Market Context and Strategic Implications
The timing coincides with Google briefly surpassing Apple in market capitalization last week, reaching a $4 trillion valuation. Apple shares dipped slightly following the announcement. Google’s AI and cloud business continues to expand, with CEO Sundar Pichai reporting more than $1 billion in cloud deals in the first three quarters of 2025—exceeding the previous two years combined.
Apple had delayed a major AI update for Siri to 2026, citing the complexity of delivering advanced features. The company had previously promoted the update in advertisements but acknowledged it would require more time. The partnership with Google is expected to accelerate the rollout of enhanced AI functionalities for Apple products, potentially closing the gap with competitors.
