The lab is developing new treatments for rare diseases using AI. The work has moved beyond computer modeling and evaluation into physical, hands-on lab research.
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, who leads one of Anthropic’s research divisions, confirmed the lab’s existence to Reuters.
“We believe that to do biology, the final test is still and will be for a while in real lab work,” he said. “We absolutely are doing that today, and I would describe our approach as being typical of what you would see in most biotech companies.”
He said some of the experimental work happens in Anthropic’s own facilities and some through external partners. The experiments aren’t limited to medicines, though he gave no further detail on what else is being tested.
One source told Reuters this is an early step toward Anthropic’s broader ambition: tackling diseases the company believes the pharmaceutical industry has neglected. The area reportedly carries personal weight for CEO Dario Amodei, who has written that his father died of an illness years before a cure became available.
Automating the Lab Itself
Anthropic is also experimenting with automating laboratory work. Claude is being trained to operate robotic lab equipment and run specific experiments with minimal human intervention, though the company says human supervision remains mandatory for safety reasons.
“We’re in the very early innings of using AI to automate the execution of lab work,” Kauderer-Abrams said, calling it an area with “potential to bring about meaningful acceleration in so many different processes.”
A Complicated Backdrop
The disclosure comes at a difficult moment for Anthropic’s public image. Over the past two weeks, former researchers have publicly warned that AI could lead to human extinction, and Anthropic itself disclosed that it had identified attempts to use Claude to help develop biological weapons.
Amodei separately called for a slowdown in AI development, arguing that future systems more powerful than the OpenAI agents that hacked Hugging Face could cause catastrophic harm.
At the same time, Anthropic is reportedly preparing for a possible IPO valued at up to $2 trillion to raise further funds for AI development. Reuters’ sourcing noted this combination, safety warnings alongside fundraising ambitions, has been met with some skepticism.
Anthropic laid groundwork for this push in June, when it announced drug development programs, released its Claude Science software, appointed the head of pharmaceutical company Novartis to its board, and acquired biotech startup Coefficient Bio for $400 million.
Recent job listings show the company seeking a manager to scale procurement and operations, plus specialists in protein and nucleic acid characterization and other biochemical work. One listing stated Anthropic’s goal is “to accelerate progress in the life sciences tenfold.”
