Key Notes

  • OpenAI says higher usage limits for Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500 and Business Premium take effect on October 29.
  • Pro 200 customers retain their current Work and Codex allowance because OpenAI has canceled the planned reduction.
  • Extended dots limits continue for now, and dot usage remains separate from the default allowance.

OpenAI has doubled usage limits across its ChatGPT Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 tiers and Business Premium, with the changes taking effect on October 29. The announcement also reverses a planned reduction for Pro 200 customers, preserving their existing Work and Codex allowance.

Thibault Sottiaux, who works on Codex and ChatGPT at OpenAI, announced the changes on X. He said feedback influenced the Pro 200 decision and confirmed that extended limits for dots will continue for now, with dot usage remaining separate from the default allowance.

Pro 200 Avoids a Planned Work and Codex Cut

The Pro 200 detail matters when interpreting the broader promise of doubled limits. Sottiaux explicitly said those subscribers’ Work and Codex usage will stay at its current level. The practical change for that allowance is the cancellation of a forthcoming cut, rather than a promise to double what those customers can already use today.

The decision follows the subscription changes introduced around DevDay. When we reported on the $500 Pro tier, eligible existing Pro 200 subscribers were still in a transition period before a lower allowance was due to apply. The latest announcement changes that outlook for people deciding whether their existing plan will support ongoing work.

For developers and other heavy users, continuity can matter as much as a larger headline limit. An agent that spends hours editing files, running tools or working through a document needs enough capacity to finish the assignment. Avoiding a scheduled reduction makes those workloads easier to plan without assuming every subscriber now has the same budget.

More Allowance Does Not Mean Unlimited Agent Work

OpenAI’s pricing guide lists Pro subscriptions at $100, $200 and $500 a month. It also explains that Work and Codex share usage, while API billing is separate. A subscription increase therefore should not be read as an API price reduction or a change to every other product’s billing.

How far an allowance stretches depends on the work. OpenAI says model choice, task complexity, context, reasoning and tool use affect consumption. Small edits can use a fraction of the resources required by a long agent session, so twice the allowance does not establish a fixed number of extra messages or completed projects.

Dots are another distinction worth keeping in view. The background assistants introduced in OpenAI’s Dots rollout have a separate allowance under the arrangement Sottiaux described. His announcement does not give an end date for the extended limits, making “for now” an important qualification for anyone building a routine around that capacity.

The immediate takeaway is more room for eligible paid users and one less looming restriction for Pro 200. Customers should check their account’s usage dashboard for the allowance and reset information that applies to their plan, especially before starting a lengthy coding or background task.
