Spotify Technology SA is increasingly relying on generative AI to speed up software development, according to comments made during its fourth-quarter earnings call. Co-CEO Gustav Söderström said some of the company’s most experienced developers have not written code manually since December, instead using AI-powered systems to build and deploy features.
Engineers use an internal platform known as Honk, which integrates generative AI tools including Claude Code. The system enables remote and real-time code deployment, allowing developers to request bug fixes or new features through Slack, even from mobile devices. Updated app versions can be reviewed and merged into production within minutes.
Spotify said the approach helped it ship more than 50 new features and updates to its streaming app during 2025. Recent launches include Prompted Playlists, Page Match for audiobooks, and the About This Song feature.
Executives also highlighted Spotify’s growing proprietary data advantage in music preferences, which it uses to train AI models. The company said it continues to monitor AI-generated music for spam while allowing creators to disclose how tracks were produced through metadata.
