OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Word, a Microsoft Office add-in that integrates ChatGPT directly into Microsoft Word for drafting, editing, and formatting documents without leaving the application. The add-in is available globally across all ChatGPT plan tiers, including Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Education, Teachers, and K-12.

The integration installs through the Microsoft Marketplace and requires users to sign in with their existing ChatGPT account. Microsoft 365 administrators may need to enable the add-in at the organizational level before employees can access it.

Once active, the tool allows users to draft new content, rewrite existing sections, sharpen arguments, review documents for inconsistencies, summarize material for executive audiences, and reformat documents based on natural language instructions. ChatGPT for Word can also draw context from connected external sources including Outlook, SharePoint, Google Workspace, and Dropbox, subject to plan permissions and workspace settings.

Recurring workflows can be standardized through skills, which allow users to apply consistent formatting rules and editorial standards across document types such as executive memos, contract reviews, and research summaries.

OpenAI noted that the add-in operates separately from standard ChatGPT conversation history and that memory does not carry over between sessions. For Business, Enterprise, Education, and Teachers plans, document data is not used to train OpenAI models by default.

The Word integration is part of a broader suite of Microsoft Office add-ins from OpenAI that also includes ChatGPT for Excel and ChatGPT for PowerPoint, all accessible through the same Microsoft Marketplace installation.
