DeepSeek is helping shape Huawei’s AI chips around its models, The Information reported on October 19. The collaboration would strengthen the connection between a major Chinese model developer and a domestic supplier of computing hardware.
Investing.com’s coverage of the report says Huawei engineers are working at DeepSeek’s offices, taking feedback on calculations and communication between processors. It also says Huawei plans to prioritize DeepSeek for much of its next-generation Ascend 960DT supply.
Huawei’s own September roadmap places the Ascend 960DT in the first quarter of 2027, three quarters earlier than previously planned. The company says it intends to release a new Ascend generation annually, with the 970 and 980 following in 2028 and 2029.
The software relationship is already visible publicly. DeepSeek’s DeepGEMM-Ascend library, initially released September 30, adapts matrix operations for Ascend 950 hardware while preserving familiar programming interfaces. That gives developers a practical route to running supported calculations on Huawei processors.
The report arrives amid tighter U.S. scrutiny of DeepSeek. A separate DHS removal order, publicly disclosed earlier on October 19, bars the company’s technology from covered civilian federal agency systems and procurements.
