OpenAI has launched an Apple Messages plugin for ChatGPT, giving users the ability to connect their Messages inbox directly to the chatbot. The integration allows ChatGPT to sort, analyze, edit, draft, send, and delete messages on a user’s behalf, as well as search through message history.

The plugin is compatible with Codex and ChatGPT Work, extending its use beyond personal messaging into professional workflows. A promotional video released by OpenAI demonstrates a user asking ChatGPT to suggest follow-up messages to contacts based on conversations received the previous day.

OpenAI told Bloomberg that the plugin runs locally on the user’s machine and does not create an index of all messages, though the company has not provided detailed technical specifics about how message data is handled during sessions.

On the question of autonomous message sending, OpenAI discourages users from enabling persistent approval, warning that doing so removes the final opportunity to review a message before ChatGPT sends it on the user’s behalf. The company encourages users to monitor the chatbot’s actions actively when the feature is in use.

The launch continues a broader pattern of AI assistants moving beyond answering questions into executing real-world actions across communication, productivity, and personal data management. ChatGPT’s integration with Apple Messages follows similar moves by other AI platforms to embed agents into native operating system features, raising ongoing questions about privacy, data handling, and the appropriate scope of AI access to personal communications.
