The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI have reached a landmark three-year agreement enabling Sora, OpenAI’s short-form generative AI platform, to produce fan-prompted social videos using over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. Curated selections of these user-generated videos will also be available for streaming on Disney+.
This agreement represents a significant step toward integrating AI into entertainment while emphasizing responsible use and protection of creative rights. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Images will allow users to generate full images from short prompts, drawing from the same intellectual property, excluding talent likenesses and voices. The project is expected to begin rolling out in early 2026.
$1 Billion Investment and AI Integration
As part of the deal, Disney will invest $1 billion in OpenAI and receive warrants to purchase additional equity. The company will also become a major customer, using OpenAI APIs to develop new products and experiences, including for Disney+, and deploying ChatGPT for internal workflows.
Disney CEO Robert A. Iger emphasized that the partnership allows fans to engage with Disney’s iconic stories and characters in richer, more personal ways, while maintaining safeguards for creators and users. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that the agreement exemplifies responsible collaboration between AI developers and creative industries to expand storytelling and innovation.
Commitment to Responsible AI
Both companies affirmed their dedication to safety and ethical AI use. OpenAI has implemented measures to prevent harmful or illegal content generation, enforce age-appropriate policies, and respect content ownership. Disney and OpenAI also commit to ensuring outputs do not misuse individual likenesses or voices, reinforcing trust and safety standards across the platform.
Fans will be able to generate content featuring a wide array of characters, including Mickey Mouse, Elsa, Simba, Iron Man, Loki, Darth Vader, and the Mandalorian, among others. The collaboration aims to expand creative possibilities for fans while upholding human-centered AI principles in the entertainment sector.
This partnership underscores a broader trend of AI integration into creative media, highlighting both the potential for immersive fan experiences and the importance of safeguarding rights and user well-being.
The development comes shortly after Disney+ plans to introduce AI-driven short-form user-generated content and game-like features, enabling fans to create content using Disney intellectual property and further enhancing engagement. Similarly, Amazon is launching AI-generated video recaps on Prime Video, offering synchronized narration and visuals to help viewers catch up between seasons.
