Xiaomi plans to release a new smartphone processor each year as it expands its capabilities in chip design and artificial intelligence, according to company president Lu Weibing.
The company introduced its first in-house system-on-chip, the XRing O1, last year using a 3 nanometer manufacturing process. Xiaomi aims to follow a yearly upgrade cycle similar to the chip strategies used by Apple and Samsung Electronics, which develop their own mobile processors. Most smartphone makers rely instead on chips from suppliers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek.
Alongside its silicon strategy, Xiaomi is preparing an AI assistant for global markets. The assistant will complement the company’s China-focused Xiao AI system and may incorporate models from Google, including Gemini. Xiaomi plans to integrate the assistant across smartphones and future electric vehicles as part of a broader ecosystem built around its HyperOS operating system.
The company has committed at least 50 billion yuan over the next decade to semiconductor development, aiming to combine its custom chips, operating system, and AI services into a unified platform.
