Coinbase is testing AI agents integrated into workplace tools such as Slack and email, marking a new phase in its push toward automation. CEO Brian Armstrong said the company has already deployed internal agents to assist employees with daily tasks and decision-making, with a long-term goal of enabling staff to create custom agents for specific workflows.

The initial rollout includes two agents modeled after former company leaders. One, inspired by co-founder Fred Ehrsam, functions as a strategic advisor, while another, based on former CTO Balaji Srinivasan, is designed to challenge assumptions and encourage unconventional thinking. The tools are embedded directly into communication platforms, allowing employees to interact with them similarly to human colleagues.

The initiative reflects a broader strategy to transform Coinbase into what Armstrong has described as an “AI-native” organization. The company has previously set goals for AI to generate a significant share of its code and is expanding automation across operations. It also launched the x402 protocol in 2025 to enable payments between AI agents, signaling a convergence between AI systems and blockchain infrastructure.

The move aligns with wider industry trends as companies experiment with agent-based workflows to improve efficiency and reduce manual work. Coinbase’s approach suggests a future where AI agents play a central role not only in execution tasks but also in strategic and creative functions within organizations.
