Meta announced commercial partnerships with news publishers to provide real-time global, entertainment, and breaking news through Meta AI, its AI chatbot. When users ask news-related questions, Meta AI now delivers information sourced from multiple publishers, including links to original articles, allowing users to explore content directly.
Partner publishers include CNN, Fox News, Fox Sports, Le Monde Group, the People Inc. portfolio, The Daily Caller, The Washington Examiner, and USA Today. Meta plans to expand its network of news partners in the future.
Reviving News Access Through AI
The initiative marks a strategic shift for Meta, which had previously reduced its focus on news. Facebook’s “News” tab was discontinued in 2024, and the company stopped compensating publishers in 2022. Meta is now investing in content partnerships to ensure its AI chatbot can provide timely and diverse news coverage.
A Meta spokesperson said the company aims to make Meta AI “more responsive, accurate, and balanced,” noting that AI systems often struggle to keep up with real-time events. By integrating multiple news sources, Meta seeks to deliver timely content with a variety of perspectives.
Platform Reach and Strategic Goals
Meta AI is accessible in over 200 countries through Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and the standalone Meta AI app. The move is designed to attract more users to the AI platform amid growing competition from rivals and to strengthen Meta’s relevance in the AI sector following criticism of Llama 4’s performance earlier this year.
By linking AI outputs directly to publisher content, Meta aims to increase audience engagement for its partners while positioning Meta AI as a reliable source for current events.
