OpenAI is rolling out group chat functionality in ChatGPT for all logged-in users across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. Initially piloted in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, the feature allows multiple participants to collaborate in the same conversation with ChatGPT. Early feedback has been positive, prompting expansion globally over the coming days.

Collaborative Features

Group chats allow users to bring friends, family, or colleagues into a shared conversation with ChatGPT. Examples include planning events, drafting work or school projects, organizing trips, or designing creative projects. ChatGPT can assist with summarizing information, generating ideas, creating itineraries, or mediating group decisions.

Each group chat is separate from private conversations, ensuring that personal memory is never shared. Participants are added via a link, and each chat can include one to twenty people. Users create a short profile with a name, username, and photo so participants can identify one another. Chats are organized in a dedicated section of the sidebar for easy access.

AI-Enhanced Interaction

Responses in group chats are powered by GPT‑5.1 Auto, which selects the most suitable model based on availability and user plan. The AI can react to messages with emojis, reference participant profile photos, and follow conversational flow—choosing when to respond or remain silent. Users can tag “ChatGPT” to prompt a response.

Group chat settings allow participants to name the group, add or remove people, mute notifications, and set custom instructions for ChatGPT’s tone or behavior. Rate limits only apply to ChatGPT responses, not messages exchanged between participants.

Privacy and Safety

Group chats are designed with privacy and control in mind. ChatGPT does not use personal memory in group chats, and no new memories are created from these conversations. Participants must accept an invitation to join, and everyone can see group membership or leave at any time. Users under 18 automatically experience reduced exposure to sensitive content, and parental controls can disable group chats entirely.

Future Outlook

OpenAI views group chats as a first step toward shared experiences in ChatGPT. The company plans to refine the feature based on user feedback, improving collaborative workflows and creative engagement. As adoption grows, group chats are expected to enhance communication, planning, and idea generation in both personal and professional contexts.

The rollout of group chats coincides with OpenAI’s ongoing expansion of ChatGPT’s advertising capabilities.
