Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) has removed its Gemma AI model from AI Studio following accusations from Senator Marsha Blackburn that the system fabricated false allegations of sexual misconduct against her. Blackburn’s letter to CEO Sundar Pichai claimed that Gemma invented details of a 1987 campaign scandal that never occurred, calling the response “an act of defamation.”
Google said the model was never intended for factual or consumer use and is meant for developer integration via API. The company attributed the issue to AI “hallucinations,” emphasizing ongoing work to improve model reliability.
The controversy arrives amid heightened scrutiny of political bias in AI systems. Blackburn’s complaint follows similar lawsuits by conservative figures, adding pressure on major tech firms to ensure their AI models don’t generate false or defamatory content. Google confirmed that Gemma will remain accessible to developers through nonpublic channels.
