Google is expanding Gemini-powered capabilities in Gmail, introducing AI tools designed to improve how users search, summarize, and manage email. The company said more than 3 billion users rely on Gmail, with AI already supporting features such as spam filtering and Smart Replies.
A new feature called AI Overviews summarizes long email threads and generates direct answers when users ask questions in natural language, reducing the need for manual searches. Conversation summaries are rolling out globally at no cost, while inbox question queries are available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Google is also upgrading writing tools. Help Me Write can draft or refine emails, while new Suggested Replies generate context-aware responses that reflect a user’s writing style. A Proofread feature adds grammar and tone checks for paid subscribers. Personalization improvements using data from other Google apps are planned next month.
Another addition, AI Inbox, highlights high-priority messages and to-dos by analyzing communication patterns and inferred relationships. The feature is currently available to a limited group of testers, with broader availability expected in coming months.
The rollout is supported by Gemini 3 and initially launches in the United States in English, with additional regions and languages planned. The move follows Google’s recent testing of CC, an experimental email-based AI assistant that delivers daily productivity briefings and task management directly through inboxes, signaling deeper integration of AI into email workflows.
