The European Commission has ordered Elon Musk’s social media platform X to retain all internal documents and data related to its built-in AI chatbot, Grok, until the end of 2026, according to a commission spokesperson. The directive extends a prior retention order issued last year covering platform algorithms and the spread of illegal content.
The move follows renewed scrutiny after the Commission said images of undressed women and children circulating on X were unlawful and unacceptable. Officials said preserving internal records ensures regulators can access technical and operational data if formal requests are made. The order does not automatically trigger a new investigation under the European Union’s Digital Services Act, but reflects concerns about compliance and oversight.
Grok is integrated directly into X and uses generative AI to respond to user prompts and surface content in real time. Regulators are increasingly focused on how AI systems influence content moderation, amplification, and user safety on large platforms. Retaining detailed system documentation allows authorities to evaluate how AI tools interact with recommendation systems and enforcement processes.
