Elon Musk said artificial intelligence could surpass all humans collectively by 2031, speaking Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos. “At the rate AI is progressing, we might have AI smarter than any human by the end of this year or next year,” Musk said, adding that collective human intelligence could be exceeded by 2030 or 2031.
Musk founded xAI in April 2023 to develop advanced AI systems. The company later launched Grok, an uncensored chatbot designed to provide real-time answers, including through images and text. Grok is integrated with X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter, which Musk also controls.
xAI’s Grok has faced regulatory action in multiple countries over its generation of sexually explicit or non-consensual images. Malaysia and Indonesia have temporarily blocked access to the chatbot, and authorities in the United Kingdom, EU, and Japan have launched investigations or formal reviews into Grok’s safety practices and compliance with local laws.
