U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders said artificial intelligence is becoming a major force in the economy and society, warning that its rapid expansion could deepen economic insecurity and strain social systems. Speaking on CNN, Sanders described AI as the most consequential technology in human history and questioned how workers would earn income if automation reduces the need for human labor.

Sanders criticized technology executives for prioritizing profits over social outcomes and said Congress has not adequately addressed AI’s impact on jobs, healthcare access, and housing. He also raised concerns about reliance on AI chatbots for emotional support and called for lawmakers to consider slowing the rollout of new AI data centers while the broader effects are studied.

Separately, Republican Senator Katie Britt outlined proposed legislation aimed at protecting minors from harmful AI chatbot interactions. The measure would restrict AI companions for children, require clear disclosure that chatbots are not human or licensed professionals, and impose criminal liability if companies expose minors to sexual content, violence, or encouragement of self-harm.

The comments reflect rare bipartisan alignment around AI governance, with both lawmakers urging stricter guardrails as AI adoption accelerates across the economy.
