Palantir Technologies said it is continuing to use AI models from Anthropic despite the U.S. Department of Defense labeling the startup a supply-chain risk.
CEO Alex Karp said the company’s platforms remain integrated with Anthropic’s Claude models while the Pentagon plans a gradual transition to alternative systems. The designation followed a dispute between Anthropic and the Defense Department over safeguards limiting the use of its AI for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons.
Anthropic has filed a lawsuit challenging the designation and is seeking a court order to pause the government’s action. In the meantime, the Pentagon continues to rely on the company’s models in certain operational contexts while evaluating replacements.
Defense Department officials said the phase-out process will take time because the technology is already embedded in existing systems. Internal guidance suggests exemptions may be granted in rare cases where Anthropic’s tools are considered essential for mission-critical national security operations.
