OpenAI Launches Stargate Community Energy Plan to Offset Data Center Electricity Costs

OpenAI has unveiled the Stargate Community plan to ensure its AI data centers do not raise local electricity costs while expanding energy infrastructure.

OpenAI has introduced the Stargate Community plan, a program designed to prevent rising electricity costs in regions hosting its Stargate data centers. The initiative commits to funding power infrastructure so operations do not increase local rates.

The plan will be tailored to each community, including new generation, storage, and transmission resources fully financed by Stargate. OpenAI will coordinate with utilities, regulators, and grid operators to operate campuses as flexible loads, reducing demand during peak hours.

Examples include Wisconsin, where Oracle and Vantage are working with WEC Energy Group to fund solar and battery storage; Michigan, where DTE Energy receives augmented battery storage financed by project partners; and Texas, where SB Energy will supply most power for the 1.2GW Milam County site, backed by a $1 billion investment from SoftBank and OpenAI.

Launched last January with SoftBank, Oracle, and Abu Dhabi’s MGX, Stargate now plans data centers totaling 5.5GW across Texas, New Mexico, and the Midwest.
