OpenAI has rolled out new features for its Sora 2 video generation app, adding “character cameos” that let users create reusable AI avatars from real or virtual subjects such as people, pets, or artwork. Each avatar comes with custom permissions, allowing creators to decide whether their likenesses are private, shared with followers, or open to all users.

The update also adds tools for stitching multiple clips into longer videos and introduces leaderboards that spotlight the most remixed videos and popular cameoed characters. To drive engagement, OpenAI has made Sora temporarily open to new users in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Korea without invitation codes.

The release follows Cameo’s trademark lawsuit over OpenAI’s use of the term “cameo.” OpenAI has yet to clarify how Sora differentiates AI-generated characters from real individuals.
