OpenAI has quietly launched ChatGPT Translate, an autonomous translation tool that supports more than 50 languages. The service closely mirrors Google Translate in layout, featuring dual text fields for input and output along with a language selection menu.
ChatGPT Translate can process text, voice, and images, though its capabilities vary by platform. The desktop version is limited to text translation, while the mobile browser version supports microphone input. Unlike Google Translate, the tool does not currently support full website or document translation.
The service also includes preset options that allow users to adjust tone and style, such as making translations more formal for business use. While translation has long been available through the main ChatGPT interface, the new offering separates the function into a dedicated web service. OpenAI has not released a standalone mobile app or disclosed which AI model powers the tool.
The launch follows OpenAI’s broader move toward specialized services, including the introduction of ChatGPT Health earlier this year, signaling a strategy to segment core AI capabilities into focused applications.
