OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT for Teachers, a specialized version of its chatbot designed for K-12 educators and school districts. The platform offers tools for lesson assistance, personalized teaching support and secure collaboration across district teams. OpenAI said the service includes administrative controls that allow district leaders to set policies and manage usage across their communities.
The company is launching the product with an initial group of districts representing about 150,000 educators. Access will be free for U.S. K-12 teachers through June 2027. OpenAI emphasized that student data shared within the platform will be protected and will not be used to train its models, addressing common concerns around privacy and data handling in educational settings.
ChatGPT for Teachers is designed for educators rather than students, with OpenAI arguing that hands-on use will help teachers establish responsible practices for AI in classrooms. The release builds on earlier education features such as Study Mode, introduced in July to support step-by-step problem solving for college students. The company positioned ChatGPT for Teachers as part of its broader strategy to expand AI-enabled learning tools.
