Mozilla has appointed Anthony Enzor-DeMeo as its new chief executive officer as the Firefox browser maker seeks to reposition itself in a browser market increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. Enzor-DeMeo succeeds interim CEO Laura Chambers, who held the role for the past two years. He previously served as general manager of Firefox and has held product leadership roles at Roofstock, Better, and Wayfair.

The leadership change comes as browsers face renewed competition from AI-native entrants such as Perplexity, Arc, OpenAI, and Opera, which are integrating AI models and agents directly into the browsing experience. These tools aim to reshape how users search, summarize, and interact with the web. Mozilla said it plans to respond by investing in AI features for Firefox while maintaining its long-standing focus on user control and transparency.

Enzor-DeMeo said AI capabilities in Firefox will be optional, allowing users to enable or disable them based on preference. Mozilla has historically attracted users seeking alternatives to heavily monetized platforms. The company is also working to diversify revenue beyond search partnerships, which currently account for a significant portion of its income through default search agreements.

Mozilla, which includes both the Mozilla Corporation and the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation, has undergone restructuring and layoffs in recent years. The company now aims to expand Firefox into a broader ecosystem of trusted software, including email, privacy tools, and AI-powered products. This strategy is also supported by Mozilla’s November announcement of AI Window, an opt-in Firefox feature that combines an AI assistant and chatbot to support web navigation while preserving user control over when and how AI is used.
