Google is rolling out new artificial intelligence features in Google Maps, using its Gemini models to simplify how users contribute photos and local content. The update aims to streamline user-generated inputs that power the platform’s location data.

The most notable addition enables Gemini to automatically generate captions for photos and videos shared by users. After selecting media, the AI analyzes the content and suggests descriptions, which users can edit or remove before posting. The feature is currently available in English on iOS in the United States, with broader global and Android support planned.

Google is also enhancing content discovery within the app. Users who enable media access can now view recent photos and videos directly in the “Contribute” tab, making it easier to upload relevant content. The update is designed to reduce friction in sharing real-time experiences.

Additional features focus on user engagement and recognition. Contributors can now track their accumulated points more easily, while profile updates highlight “Local Guide” levels and introduce new badges that reflect contribution expertise.

The rollout supports Google Maps’ ecosystem of over 500 million contributors, whose inputs are critical for maintaining up-to-date location data. By integrating AI into the contribution process, Google is aiming to increase participation and improve content quality at scale.

The update reflects Google’s broader strategy of embedding AI across its products to automate workflows and enhance user interaction, particularly in services that rely heavily on community-driven data.
