Google DeepMind announced plans to open its first automated research lab in the U.K. next year, combining AI and robotics to run experiments. The lab will focus on developing new superconductor materials for medical imaging and advanced semiconductor materials.
Under the partnership, British scientists will receive priority access to DeepMind’s AI tools. The collaboration may also extend to government projects in nuclear fusion and deployment of DeepMind’s Gemini models across U.K. public services and education.
Founded in London in 2010 by Nobel laureate Demis Hassabis and acquired by Google in 2014, DeepMind has maintained a major U.K. presence and is recognized for key AI breakthroughs.
U.K. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said the agreement exemplifies U.K.-U.S. tech collaboration and could drive cleaner energy, smarter public services, and innovation across the country. Hassabis highlighted the lab’s potential to advance science, strengthen security, and deliver tangible benefits to citizens.
The lab aligns with broader U.K. efforts to expand AI infrastructure, following $40 billion in planned investment by Microsoft, Nvidia, Google, and OpenAI.
