Figma has rolled out new AI-powered tools to simplify image editing inside its design platform. The update includes the ability to remove objects, isolate elements for repositioning, and expand images beyond their original boundaries. The company said the goal is to eliminate the need for shifting files between Figma and dedicated editing software for small adjustments.

A redesigned lasso tool now allows more precise object selection that preserves background and lighting consistency when elements are moved. Designers can also adjust shadows, color, and focus to maintain visual accuracy. Image expansion supports adapting creative assets to formats like web banners or mobile layouts by generating missing background content automatically.

Figma is also consolidating editing capabilities into a single toolbar for quicker access to common tasks like background removal, object selection, and annotation. These features are available today in Figma Design and Draw, with broader availability planned next year.

Competition in AI design tools continues to accelerate. Figma’s launch coincides with Adobe adding similar features inside ChatGPT, and Figma was an early ChatGPT integration partner. The company is also advancing its AI strategy through recent moves, including acquiring Weavy to build Figma Weave and partnering with Google Cloud to embed Gemini and Imagen models directly into creative workflows.
