Developer activity across blockchain ecosystems has declined sharply as programmers shift their focus toward artificial intelligence projects. According to data from analytics platform Artemis, weekly crypto code commits on GitHub fell roughly 75% since early 2025, dropping from about 850,000 to around 210,000.
Active blockchain developers also declined about 56% to roughly 4,600 during the same period. Major networks such as Ethereum and Solana saw notable drops in contributors, while newer ecosystems including Aptos, BNB Chain, and Celo experienced even steeper declines.
In contrast, artificial intelligence development is expanding rapidly. GitHub added approximately 36 million developers in 2025, bringing its global user base to more than 180 million. The platform now hosts more than 4.3 million AI-related repositories, with projects using large language model software development kits rising sharply over the past year.
Machine learning workflows are driving much of the growth. Repositories using Jupyter Notebooks for experimentation increased about 75%, while Dockerfile repositories used for AI deployment grew roughly 120%. Generative AI projects now attract more than one million monthly contributors, highlighting how developer talent is increasingly flowing toward AI infrastructure and applications rather than blockchain platforms.
